Instructing Solicitor - Staffordshire County Council : Principal Solicitor - Development Services

I have known Grant for many years, having instructed him in a large and highly contentious minerals planning case which was ultimately resolved by mediation techniques, following a successful trial in the Court  of Appeal.

His involvement was principally as an expert witness in the area of photogrammetric evidence (interpretation of aerial photographs and related issues), but he became a key member of the litigation team which was eventually able to reach a negotiated settlement, following several years of complex litigation, which became a widely reported case on a key legal issue (winning and working of minerals ).

Grant's technical expertise was second to none, but he also demonstrated great pragmatism and all round professionalism, which was highly valued by our client.

I would have no hesitation in recommending him to act on similar matters again.

People skills

As Director and senior manager, Grant has led teams of up to 60 people in a range of organisations both within government and private practice. He therefore has extensive depth of knowledge on resolving personnel staffing issues. His involvement in all aspects of management from recruitment through to staff discipline issues has given him extensive knowledge of business staffing issues which makes him an ideal facilitator for workplace conflict management. Grant enjoys working on a one to one basis and his pleasant & friendly personality helps him relate to those in dispute.

Professionalism when it counts

As a Chartered Land Surveyor, photogrammetrist, and Licensed Cadastral Surveyor, Grant has been recognised for his professionalism and has published several papers particularly related to mapping developments at Ordnance Survey GB. Following his successful completion of his Master of Science degree at University College London (UCL), he rapidly became a fellow of both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and The Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (London). Grant is the first Chartered Land Surveyor to achieve 'RICS Accredited Mediator' status and his achievements have enabled him to be recognised as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

As Registrar of Lands, Grant was regularly required to adjudicate on complex land and boundary issues. Statutory hearings were a routine part of the work whilst, sessions in Court to give expert evidence took place worldwide from the High Courts of Justice, London, Montserrat, and the Cayman Islands to the High Court in Singapore.

Knowledge of Ordnance Survey & Mediation

Whilst at Ordnance Survey Grant established their Expert Witness Group, which provided surveys and professional advice in neighbourhood boundary disputes, as featured in the Neighbours at War television series. He represented Ordnance Survey on many occasions regarding land disputes varying from small back garden garage disputes settled in the County Court through to major High Court cases in  London & Singapore. Thankfully many disputes were settled prior to litigation due to the quality of advice given to clients and constructive mediation processes.

Project Management

Grant is also a Certified Project Manager who has been involved in numerous multi-million pound projects relating to land and property. Working with the Department for International Development (DFID) he utilised management, survey, mapping and IT skills to implement complex projects on budget and on time. His extensive and varied work experience enables him to identify key issues and to resolve them in a structured and timely manner to the considerable cost & time benefit of his clients.

Land Survey & Aerial photographic skills

Grant originally trained with Ordnance Survey as a cartographic surveyor in 1974 working on 1:1250, 1:2500 & 1:10 000 mapping. Initially practicing throughout Southern England, Grant rapidly gained experience in all aspects of land & aerial survey through his day to day work and his continued technical & academic training at Ordnance Survey, University of East London and finally University College London where he gained his Masters degree in Photogrammetric Engineering. He has more recently completed aerial imagery campaigns & new GPS 3D-geodetic networks in 2 British Overseas Territories, and a hydrographic surveying campaign in the Cayman Islands. Grant's surveying and photogrammetric aerial survey and analysis skills and experience is therefore extensive and enables him to carry out work as an Expert Witness.

He now heads up DMC's Boundary Dispute Resolution survey team. Utilising modern Leica total station survey instrumentation and laser measurement, Grant is able to help clients resolve their boundary problems by comprehensive research, ground survey and the production of CAD plans for successful Boundary Determination with HM Land Registry.

Expert Witness - boundary disputes

Grant also carries out Expert Witness work for boundary disputes using his survey & photogrammetric experience to produce CPR compliant expert reports for disputes that are at litigation. Frequently these reports enable the process to be stopped and the dispute resolved prior to a Court determination which helps save clients from the excessive costs of litigation. Grant's reports range from £2,500 to over £20,000 depending on the scope and complexity of the report required.
