Government is committed to mediation for family disputes

Tue, 30 November 2010

Ministry of Justice has today issued yet another indication that the coalition Government strongly supports mediation in relation to family disputes.

The Minister delivered the Lucy Faithfull Memorial Lecture during which he emphasised the great importance the government now places on the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR). He stated that "in future, as a rule, we do not propose that the taxpayer should be funding routine divorce and ancillary relief cases or disputes about the arrangements for their children."

He continued to ensure clarity that the government "remain committed to supporting families at these most difficult moments and believe it is right to continue to provide those who are eligible, with Legal Aid for mediation in relation to disputes over arrangements for children, and disputes over property and finance that have arisen as a result of family relationship breakdown."
