Gordon Brown announces Ordnance Survey Mapping to be free on-line

Wed, 18 November 2009

After a three year campaign by The Guardian newspaper, Gordon Brown yesterday announced that the Southampton based, Ordnance Survey will be 'opened up'. Mid scale mapping from 1:10,000 upward will be available free via the internet for commercial use. This radical initiative is in strict contraction to Ordnance Survey's existing commercial strategy driven to extreme by OS CEO Vannessa Lawrence since 2001. There are lots of issues still to be teased out of this opening statement by the Prime Minister and consultations will be starting in Decemeber which should reveal the true extent of this change. As to how this will impact land related expert witness and boundary dispute resolution will need to be reviewd once full details are available. Watch this space!
