Phillippa is a graduate in economics from New Hall (now Murray Edwards College), Cambridge,  a  Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII) and Chartered Insurance Practitioner, a Fellow of The Academy of Experts (FAE) and accredited expert witness, and an accredited mediator on both the ARIAS(UK) and Academy of Experts' panels. She is also an experienced arbitrator, and arbitration chairman, and a member of  the ARIAS(UK) panel of arbitrators, and an expert determiner, and was appointed a Claims Adjudicator under the WFUM companies' Scheme of Arrangement.

Her current professional activities include provision of arbitration, mediation and expert witness services and expert opinions, technical consultancy, audit and inspection services on reinsurance, binding authority and insurance matters to members of the Lloyd's and London and international insurance and reinsurance markets.

Phillippa also trains and assesses mediation skills for The Academy of Experts and elsewhere.  In January 2011 and 2012  she acted as a judge and "mediator" at the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators Competitions in Mediation Skills for law students. She also lectures and writes widely on Mediation and ADR, and is the author of two important books on the subject.

Mediation experience

Phillippa's primary expertise is in insurance and reinsurance claims negotiation, management and settlement. She acts as mediator, arbitrator and expert witness in re/insurance related and other general commercial disputes, and in particular has mediated some major insurance claims and insurer-broker disputes.  She has mediated almost 30 disputes, approximately 80% of which have been successfully settled.

She has extensive experience of Lloyd's, London market and world-wide insurance and reinsurance principles and practice, gathered over fourteen years as a leading market participant in the role of Claims Manager for the Kiln group at Lloyd's, and over twenty as an independent reinsurance consultant.

At Lloyd's she was responsible for negotiation and settlement of major international insurance and reinsurance claims and disputes, and for negotiating and agreeing reinsurance contract wordings.

She has given expert and factual evidence on London Market practice and claims related matters both in court and to arbitration tribunals, including in Ontario, Bermuda, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, and in US Federal Court proceedings, and in Israel, and sat as a re/insurance arbitrator and mediator in London and in Bermuda.

Phillippa has written extensively on both (re)insurance and dispute resolution subjects.

Her dispute resolution publications include numerous articles and book reviews, and two important books:
