Professional Experience

Commencing work in 1973 as a Quantity Surveyor, Michael gained experience of roads, bridges, structures and drainage associated with motorway construction before working on sewage plants, industrial buildings, retail units and social housing. He also gained experience of specialist subcontract work including industrial roofing and cladding, mastic asphalt and built-up felt roofing.

Whilst working in the construction industry Michael qualified as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and a Chartered Builder.

His employers included Fairclough Civil Engineering (now Amec plc), Sir Alfred McAlpine, Henry Boot Construction and Briggs Amasco (part of the Tarmac Group).

In 1987 Michael moved into Loss Adjusting, where he continued to use his building and civil engineering knowledge in dealing with insurance claims for a wide range of policies. Over the years he has investigated and settled domestic and commercial claims for buildings and contents, together with Contractors' All Risks, Business Interruption, Public Liability, Products Liability, Goods in Transit, Subsidence and Construction Plant.

In conjunction with the above, Michael qualified as a Chartered Loss Adjuster, Chartered Insurance Practitioner and European Loss Adjusting Expert.

His employers have included Ellis & Buckle (now Cunningham Lindsey), Davies, Buckley Scott Associates and Garwyns.

In 2008, whilst working for Cunningham Lindsey, Michael also qualified as an Accredited Mediator, subsequently being appointed as Head of Mediation Services whilst simultaneously acting in a loss adjusting capacity within the Liability Services Complex Loss team. In addition to mediating commercial disputes, Michael also carries out voluntary community mediation work for Smile Mediation, a charity based in Burnley where he was also a Director until setting up Green Doors Mediation CIC in May 2012 to undertake community and workplace mediation in the North West.

Michael has now completed approximately 80 mediations of all types.

Michael is an Accredited Associate of the Dispute Mediation Consultancy.

Life style

Michael is a divorced father of two girls. His interests include skiing, gym training, running, woodwork, woodturning, DIY, and computers/ website building.

In addition to carrying out voluntary community mediation work for Smile Mediation, he is also active in community mediation and workplace mediation through Green Doors Mediation CIC, where he is a Director.
