Testimonials

Why choose an accountant as a mediator?  Because accountants understand business and figures, of course; but because an accountant like Chris Makin has been round the block enough times to have seen it all before, and to understand.  He listens!  See what others say after he has helped them:

“Chris Makin managed to move entrenched parties to address difficult issues and resolve a situation that looked impossible.”

“We were involved in a shareholder dispute for clients where there had been little communication between the parties in conflict prior to mediation. Both parties felt that mediation would be a preferable route to resolving issues rather than an expensive, rule-driven process through the Courts. It was important for the future of the business to secure a speedy, and, if possible amicable resolution to the Dispute. Chris was appointed Mediator and used his considerable skills and knowledge to secure what was considered to be the right result for the parties and the on-going business. It was apparent that Chris had prepared well in advance for the issues and his experience as a Forensic Accountant assisted greatly in identifying the difficult areas and guiding the parties to their settlement, such that all parties were able to shake hands at the end of the two day meeting and move forward with their own ambitions. Well done Chris!

“All disputes should if possible be settled this way. Great mediator!”

 "Great help from you yesterday."

"I thought you handled the matter admirably."

"We felt that you had a most reassuring and controlled approach to the issues."

"I will have no hesitation in putting your name forward in future."

"A mediator who is also an accountant is without doubt a benefit!"

"This was an extremely satisfying outcome to this long running dispute."

"Court proceedings would have been in neither party's interests."

"Excellent service, thanks for sorting this out."

"Pleased with the outcome."

"Chris Makin managed to move entrenched parties to address difficult issues and resolve a situation that looked impossible."

"I was very impressed by the way this case was resolved."

"We picked a first rate man for a very difficult case"

"Great Mediator!  All disputes should if possible be settled this way."

Publications & Broadcasts

Chris trained at Henley Management School in radio & tv interview techniques.  He has conducted research and given interviews for BBC Radio 4's "File on Four" and "The Report" on the financing of the BNP and of Premiership Football Clubs, and on Radio 5 Live on multipliers and discount rates in personal injury litigation.

He frequently has articles on mediation and expert witness topics in legal journals, and until the death of David Kemp QC he maintained the tax chapter in Kemp & Kemp "The Quantum of Damages", the leading work on personal injury and fatal accident litigation.  He also wrote a chapter for that work on Loss of Profits for the Self-Employed and Family Business, which provides a simply guide to business and how to quantify loss of profits if things go wrong.  This chapter is now out of copyright, and available on request at no cost.

Chris's guide to expert determination is available on the ICAEW website at this link:

Lifestyle

Chris has been married for over 40 years to Gillian, a music teacher.  They have one daughter, Mrs Rebecca Woodward BSc (Hons) ARCS ACA ACT, a statistician at Halifax Bank.  Her husband Rich is a senior manager at Deloitte, and in September 2010 they had their first child, Elizabeth (Beth), who shows great promise as a percussionist and conversationalist (!).

Chris is principal double-bass and Gill plays horn in the Leeds Symphony Orchestra (the real LSO!) and in West Riding Opera.  Links: www.lso.org.uk and www.west-riding-opera.co.uk

For 30 years Chris and Gill ran the Huddersfield Youth Brass Ensemble, a group of three brass bands - junior, youth and adult - which made many foreign concert tours, including to many European countries, and to the USA and Canada several times each.  They gave a vast number of concerts, in venues as varied as Como Cathedral, Fulda Dom, Magic Kingdom and Epcot in Walt Disney World Florida, and the NASA Space Center at Cape Canaveral.  They also made many broadcasts and appeared on BBC's Songs of Praise, and have appeared before HM The Queen and other members of the Royal family.
